Mixed emotions

Got my first postdoc interview call letter last night. Feeling happy, excited, nervous and terrified all at the same time. The battle begins now...

@ Carolinagal: Thanks. It is an R&D organization associated with Univ of California. My bf is in CA. So trying to find something there.

@ Samby: You can sing. I sing even the day of my exams :) And about nervousness, I think I will need liquor chocolates to handle that :P

@ Ankur: Thanks. I need that :)

@ Pri: Hmm..I certainly feel that way at the moment. Maybe I'll look back and agree after I win the battle :)

@ Anjuli & Pavi: Thanks girls!

@ Solitaire: Yeah, the big battle started long time ago. 5 years of grad school gave me a false sense of security. Getting back into job hunting feels like a new battle :)

thanks. maybe you can give me some tips on how to :)

tips (if you still need them): and these are nothing new, but they worked for me.

be confident. be very confident.

practise the talk a lot. to friends/coworkers etc. not just by yourself at home. practise in an empty room, timed, questions etc.

take your time to answer questions, you don't have to answer right away.

keep water with you while at the talk.

its also okay to admit you don't know the answer, and that you will look it up.

ask all the questions you have about the potential advisor, lab, etc. keep your eyes peeled for signs such as badly disorganised lab, animosity/unfriendliness in the atmosphere.
interview the lab as much as they are interviewing you. questions such as (when p.i is not around) "Would you advise your friend to take up a position here"

find out scope of life outside lab. when you're done with grad school, you MUST have one.

whew. thats what i can think of now. may be sometime i'll do a post.
