How important are brand names?

My friend N and I have these long 'nonsense' conversations every now and then. Last night during one such session, she offered me to take her boyfriend because it seemed like I have more things in common with T than she has. razz

Of course I said "No thanks" and to that she said "You are saying no to an ex-IITian!!! Poor T, he will be crushed."

Now I can understand if T feels crushed because a girl said no to a 'nice guy' like him but what's with the brand names? How does getting a degree from a good school makes someone irresistible as a companion?

I know a good education can mean that there are better chances of having financial security and intelligent conversations, but my personal experience says that a great professional resume is no guarantee of a great human being. And I know a few 'famous school' graduates who liked 'Welcome' more than 'Taare Zameen Par'. So there goes the intellectual conversation.

I hope N didn't say 'yes' to T because of the IIT tag!

People fail to understand that there is a continuum for everything. There can be an IITian who scored the poorest in the entire institution while there can be someone who may have won medals despite coming from an accredited university.

a lot of IITians unfortunately equate their identity with the college.

U so right gurl!!i dont believe tht ppl wth good tags (from good institutes) make gr8 companions!!tht completely depends on ur compatibility wth tht person.and plz i find nerdish ppl boring! :P no offense to ppl from good institutes....but if u ask me Ii being an mba myself) i wudnt go for a guy jus coz he's from a good b school!!there's more to a guy than jus tht.

Maybe your friend mentioned it because thats how her BF identifies himself!

Ugh! I hate it when people judge based on which school someone went to. I knew a gal who would only date ivy leaguers (stanford, mit, types) and these guys invariably turned out to be just so full of themselves, I couldn't bear to even look at them! Am SO glad she finally got married to this really sweet and down to earth guy, who's also very smart, but not from that well known a university.

galz can be real crazy ya they have all the issues in the world..they have weird critera for their men like a cuz of mine (whos done her pg in medicine) wanted to marry sum1 frm the medicine field PLUS..he shuda done it frm a govt recognised coll n not sum pvt coll coz u knw u have these *paid seats in pvt colls. basically he shud be meritorious and if he had some rank in the board exams tat'd be an added advtg.

CRAZY MAN

ohhh i've heard plenty of this too.. OMG, that guy is frm IIM, IIT, Harvard etc etc etc... he must be smart!
yeah therz some amt of truth to it...If he didn't have the brains, he would not have got into a top notch university...n being in such an institute ppl think he must hv an open mind n this n that...
oh well, but how does it make him the RIGHT person for ME? ;-)

Hubby n I have studied in institutes that are not too famous and are happy abt it :)

It is more fun in saying no to IITians and IIMs for the same reasons in that case. :-)

@ Solitaire: You are absolutely right about the continuum. But even if someone is a topper, he/she might not be a great person or at least not great for everyone as a partner. That is what I wanted to say.

@ Cynic: Yeah. Makes no sense to me.

@ Ria: You and I think alike :)

@ AM: Yes this guy and his family is also little too proud of his academic achievements. My friend talks as if she and her family are uneducated and worthless compared to his family, even though they are quite successful people.

@ Elusive: Ya, I know some of those girls too. I wonder if they really find happiness, especially the ones who have nothing else common with their partners.

@ Pavi: "How does it make him the RIGHT person for ME?"
That's exactly what I wanted to say :)

@ Arunima: You are evil..reminds me of 'me' :P
