Illusions

J's boss asked him today about my future plans (sigh..even people who haven't met me are concerned about my future now!)

Anyways, so when J told Mr. Boss about my intentions of finding a post doc in some university and my disinterest in industrial jobs, he said: "She must be from a rich family that she is studying so much." (Hello! I pay my bills myself and since when did academics become a time pass for rich people??).

Looks like unless you do a 9-5 job and earn in 6 figures, your job is not a 'real job'.

J is now dreaming about a 4 bed-room flat in some big city and a diamond cladded bride sponsored by 'the rich family'.

Oh trust me! I get that ALL THE TIME!

"Why are you studying so much? Are you afraid of the real world?"

Yes, you idiots. I prefer the neurotic people who come to the clinic than psychotic people like you.

Hey did you send me your email address to give you access to my protected blogs?

@solitaire: Yeah. I get that sometimes from newly met people. Not too often though because most of my family and friends are in academics themselves.

But this is the first time someone thought that I'm doing this because I am from a rich family. That was just too funny.

I was using my major e-mail to access blogs. Didn't want to put it in public. But I changed it today. Please add me now. The id is : ps_postscriptum at yahoo

@ankur: I wasn't really annoyed by his asking because he is my bf's boss and they are quite good friends. But, I find it strange that academics is not considered as real job and it was funny that he thinks I am rich :D

The dowry part was just a joke. We were imagining absurd things to do if my family was really rich, like Mr.Boss imagined :D
No dowry in reality. We hate the people who take dowry too. Besides I have the degrees. So I should be getting the dowry :P

Good luck with your study plans :)

Ughh,...if I had a dollar everytime someone asked me,

"Why do you have to study so much? All for a measly post-doc salary of 35K??" I'd be a rich girl!!!

I so understand what you mean girl.

hahaha. Really people ask this so much? My family and friends are mostly in academics. So I don't get this one much.
